Just when you thought this story was dead and the Dems were going to roll over for us some knucklehead says something to keep the story rolling. It seems that Sen. Nelson of Nebraska is completely open to the idea of using reconciliation to pass Health-care reform.
Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) said he is, in fact, open to using a parliamentary maneuver to pass healthcare reform with a simple majority in the Senate.
Nelson told Nebraska reporters that he could support passing current health legislation using budget reconciliation as long as he believes the underlying bill is good.
“I’ve been asked about whether I’d support using the process known as reconciliation now,” Nelson said. “So, I want to make it clear: If I support a bill, then I will vote for it regardless of whether it takes 50 votes to pass or 60 votes to pass. My position doesn’t change just because the House or Senate decides to change the process.”
Up until today there were about 8 Democrats who were unsure about reconciliation, but I suppose we can now cross Nelson off that list and jot him down for utter humiliating loss in 2012. If you think the Cornhusker Kickback was bad, just wait until the folks see this reconciliation process in action, the GOP is going to have a field day. In fact, if I could think of an almost sure fire way to give the GOP a filibuster-proof majority by 2012 this would be on the top of the list. I’m guessing Nelson won’t be eating in any pizza joints in Omaha soon.
At this point the GOP is doing their best impersonation of Briar Rabbit, “please Democrats, don’t use reconciliation.”
It does seem that the Dems are desperately trying to figure out a way to pass something including bizarre parliamentary shenanigans which are probably not even legal or at least unprecedented.
“Neither the House nor the Senate have figured out how to pass a reconciliation sidecar first,” one senior Senate aide says. “We are being asked to pass a piece of legislation that amends another piece of legislation which does not exist yet. We are having problems with the CBO and parliamentarian on that front.”
Yeah, what could go wrong with that plan.
This guy is indeed the most heartless, hateful, and gutless bastard in all of Congress! Your thoughts.
